FAQs

What is a Charter School?

A charter school operates on a contract with a local school district. Charter schools usually receive at least 80% of the per-student financing provided by the state. The district keeps the rest.

A charter school has its own board of directors and is run independently of the school district. However, the contract with the district requires the charter school to meet specific academic achievement goals and financial standards. Failure to meet these goals and standards can lead to revocation of the contract and closure of the charter school.
