Amazing Results

Since it opened in fall of 2002, Arthur Academy has astonished parents by moving their children an average of more than 30 percentile points on national achievement tests.

In a written survey taken with all Arthur Academy parents, every single parent said they were satisfied with the school. 96% said they were “highly satisfied.”

The graphs below summarize test scores from all 302 students in all four Arthur Academies during the fourth year in operation.

The Fall bar graph for both reading and math shows the portion of the total population that ranked in the four ranges of the normal curve distribution at the beginning of the year. Some of these students were new to the schools and some had returned.

The second bar graph for both reading and math compares the portion of students in these ranges at the beginning of the year to the portion of students in these ranges at the end of the year.

By the end of the year, the largest portion of the students in math and reading were ranked in the high and above average range. The total amount of students in the above average and high ranges equaled 227 or 74 percent in reading and 217 or 72 percent in math.

Clearly, the number of low performing students diminished dramatically during the school. And, correspondingly, the number of high performing and above average students increased. See graph below.

The kindergarten graphs below show that when students reach a high level of performance in their work, they tend to remain at that level in later grades. Each colored line is a different kindergarten class at the David Douglas school, which is the school that has been the longest in operation. Each kindergarten class made dramatic gains at first, close to the 80th percentile, and maintained that level to the end of the grade completed in 2006. The purple line shows the gain of all four kindergarten classes from all four schools combined.

All of these scores are class averages. The question about class averages is: how widely do the individual scores vary? The last set of graphs seeks to answer this question by showing all of the individual scores of the first kindergarten class over a period of four years. The lines demonstrate that there was very little variation. Most of the students obtained high scores in that class. They even were raised considerably during third grade. Most of the students in third grade did work in curriculum materials that are at the fourth grade level. This demonstrates that, in the programs offered at Arthur Academy, our students can continue to excel when they are doing more complicated, higher level tasks in reading and math.
